You don’t see this on a street corner every day.

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti, The United Methodist Church is filling containers in four cities –San Antonio, Atlanta, Kansas City, and Charlotte – with an estimated five tons of rubble to illustrate the magnitude of the destruction as well as the country’s ongoing need.

The earthquake in Haiti left behind 25 million cubic yards of rubble, only about 5 percent of which has been removed. The amount of rubble in one container represents only 0.00015 percent of what is still in Haiti.

Pictured is the rubble container at San Antonio’s Main Plaza.  San Antonio was chosen as a location because of the close ties between University United Methodist Church and Haiti. Over the Memorial Day weekend in 2010, church volunteers built 70 hurricane shelters for earthquake victims in 48 hours. The shelters were built in the church’s parking lot and then shipped to Haiti through a partnership with C.O.R.E. Alliance. All of the shelters that were erected prior to Hurricane Tomas withstood the hurricane.

The church plans a mission trip to Haiti in June to do minor construction and debris removal, as well as other ways to get involved in relief efforts for those who are unable to go but still want to help.
