Perspectives on the season

Have you ever stopped to chew on the Christmas story? Whether you are searching or an every-week churchgoing person, you have probably heard snippets of the Christmas story: shepherds, stars, cattle, teenage couple, donkeys, baby.

The cast sounds like the description of some strange Broadway play, doesn’t it? It sounds unbelievable, even comical, to think that amid the manure of a stable in an ancient land, peace and goodwill came in a tiny, burping package. However, just for a moment, as amazing as it sounds, consider the implications.

What if God exists? What if God decided to come in human form – not just any human form – but the form of a baby? What if God chose two young teenagers to be the baby’s parents?  What if those crazy teenagers were on board with this plan? What if the myths are true?

Look at it this way. If the Christmas story really is just a story, what really changes in your life or in the world? You probably will still worry about your bank balance at the end of December and the world news will still look about as far from “peace on earth” as you could imagine. For just a moment, however, imagine the story is true. What changes?  Everything.

If that baby lying in a manger really is who so many over the centuries have believed him to be, everything changes.  God is no longer distant and aloof, but here with us. God is no longer silent to the world’s cries of pain and suffering. God has joined their cries. Does it sound unbelievable? Yes. What if you spent this Christmas season believing – or trying to believe – that love, indeed, came down at Christmas?
