How do you confess when you’ve done something wrong or when life is amiss?
Some confess in private prayer — keeping their business between themselves and the Almighty. Others might confide to a close friend — the friend who loves you enough to not judge according to your worst deeds.
Some people make confession an event — reciting their deeds to a counselor, clergy person, or accountability group. Every now and then, someone confesses to the masses…
and we love it.
As the new year arrives, it’s a natural time to start thinking of practices that will help us improve our lives. Our first inclination is to start with how we can improve our bodies, so we make resolutions regarding our diets and good intentions to exercise. We also realize that we need to nurture our minds, so we observe the practice of reading a new book or taking a class. But, it’s much harder to identify ways to attend to our spirituality.
"Art is not an end in itself. It introduces the soul into a higher spiritual order, which it expresses and in some sense explains." -Thomas Merton, monk, writer, theologian.
Contemplating art can be a means for spiritual connection. It can provide moments of spiritual awakening.
